Rebetiko-ρεμπέτικο
Yannis Adoniou’s KUNST–STOFF is a San Francisco-based, Goldie Award-winning contemporary
dance company that has been creating eclectic movement-focused art experiences in the Bay Area for the past ten years. The company has developed a new multi-disciplinary collaboration titled
“Rebetiko,” exploring the music and themes of the refugee, and featuring choreography by artistic
director Yannis Adoniou, music by Minos Matsas and vocals by Catherine Clambaneva. “Rebetiko” – the name for a type of Greek underground folk music – it was developed as part of a residency at Dock 11 in Berlin in July 2009, and at the counterPULSE Performing Diaspora Residency Program in San Francisco. ODC Theater Inaugural Season Opening Program, San Francisco 2010, presented the work.

KUNST-STOFF blends the past and present in a tale where those far from home find expression
and survival through Rebetiko. Rebetiko music — similar to that of the tango, flamenco, the blues, and Fado — was born out of sorrow, pain, desire, and yearnings, specifically those of Turkish Greek refugees seeking to adjust to a new life in a new country, far from home. Adoniou is exploring the origins and evolution of Rebetiko in a collaboration with Minos Matsas.
The score is based on the original lyrics written by his grandfather Minos Matsas, an established rebetiko songwriter. Working with the musical essence and lyrics of the rebetiko Matsas is re-constructing the original tunes combining them with his own melodic and rhythmic elements.
Catherine Clambaneva, a performing artist specializing in traditional Greek music, as the project’s lead vocalist. Catherine who has a versatile voice and is a native speaker in Greek and English,
expresses in the most appropriate way the sadness and ecstasy of the rebetiko songs.
