REBETIKO

In the early 1900’s Asia Minor Greeks were forced to flee their
homes and resettle in the larger cities of Greece, bringing with them their traditional music. The Kymata Trio follows in the footsteps of these persecuted Asia Minor Greeks, particularly a sub-culture called "Rebetes", through their music spanning a period of roughly 50-60 years. The music of the “Rebetes” now referred to as Rebetiko (Reh-beh-teek–oh), has gone through a transformation, acquiring its own peculiar character. The songs, often compared to American blues, are full of grief, bitterness, passion and romance, telling the stories of simple ordinary people.

A night of Blues at the JCC
Saturday, December 15th 2007 at 8pm
Kymata Band and the Tribal Blues Band perform an evening of blues.
Since their founding more than a decade ago, Kymata has become a prominent fixture in the Greek community. They have developed a repertoire that tops a thousand songs and spans the full spectrum of Greek styles and musical traditions including Greek hits, old pops, Rembetika (often referred to as Greek Blues), Kantades Plakiotika, and Dimotika.
The Tribal Blues Band embodies the universal and human emotion of what binds us all together - the blues; before people knew they had Simchas, they had Tzorus - the Blues. The band plays original and standard blues, jazz and funk music.

On Friday, February 23rd, Bay Area Classical Harmonies and the Pro Arts Gallery present the Kymata Band. Kymata
will take you on a musical journey through time and place, beginning in
Ancient Greece and ending in Modern Greece. They will demonstrate the
lineage of contemporary Greek music, exploring the most influential
time periods in Greek history and how they each affected the musical
traditions of Greece. The program will include the earliest known
composition, found on the Epitaph of Seikilos that dates back to c. 200
BC, a song celebrating the coming of spring from the Byzantine period,
a patriotic song spurring on the Greek Revolution, and songs of the
Rebetic tradition, often referred to as Greek Blues. Explanations and
visual presentations will enhance the musical component of the concert.
They will conclude the program with a sampling of contemporary Greek
music where the audience will be able to identify familiar patterns and
sounds from the past. (Click Here to check out the Kymata Band's website) Kymata is lead by George Mylordos on Bouzouki, with Kosta Papamichael on vocals, guitar and dumbec and Katerina Clambaneva on vocals. The band has been a fixture in the bay area’s Greek community since 1994, and has featured a number of musicians through the years. Kymata was featured on KQED’s Spark and a video clip can be viewed a here: http://www.kqed.org/arts/people/spark/profile.jsp?id=4569 In 2006 a partnership was formed between the ProArts Gallery and Bay Area Classical Harmonies (BACH). They each felt it was important to cross artistic genres and expose their patrons to a unique experience where several senses were engaged at a time. Thus, the Last Friday of the Month Concert series was created. BACH, a non-profit organization, has been dedicated to the presentation of fine classical music in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and is now expanding into presenting world music.
